Sailing to Grímsey
Sailing to Grímsey
Hidden gem off the strands coast
Grímsey, located in Steingrímsfjörður, is the largest island along the Strands coast and a true hidden gem. Known for its dramatic scenery and rich birdlife, the island is home to one of Iceland’s largest puffin colonies, with an estimated 25,000–30,000 breeding pairs each summer.
During the summer months, Malarhorn offers regular guided sailing tours to Grímsey aboard the vessel Sundhani ST3. These seasonal tours operate from June 15th to mid-August, weather permitting.
Departing from the harbour in Drangsnes, two daily sailings are available:
Morning departure at 09:00
Midday departure at 13:30
The tour lasts approximately three hours and includes a scenic cruise around the island before landing. Once ashore, guests have 1–2 hours to explore Grímsey, stroll across the island, visit the lighthouse, and take in the unspoiled nature and thriving birdlife.
Along the way, there is a good chance of whale sightings, and sea angling is available when conditions allow.
This experience is perfect for travellers seeking authentic nature, wildlife encounters, and the peaceful atmosphere of a remote Icelandic island, all viewed from the sea.
